Newie = Goodie

This is something that’s going to be bigger than big. It’s a CVP rear hub bike, by a bunch called Fallbrook Technologies, in the US, under the name NuVinci. See my photos here, or the website here.

It uses a constantly variable toroidal transmission system (NOT planetary gears or fluid drive – check the website) to transmit an infinitely variable drive from input to output, with no crunching, clicking or jumping when you change gears. You can tune it ever so slightly to adjust for a particular hill.

On the downside, the unit is a little heavy, and there feels to be some loss of power in the drivetrain, although not as much as in a conventional geared hub. It is a very smooth ride, and stops you having to think too much about changing gears.
